why do you guys waste so much precious time on the net asking about pets health when a call to the vet or?

24 hour animal hospital is not only free but staffed with professionals who can tell you what to look for in the future if they don’t think they need to seem them right away?

A good vet will always answer your questions on the phone for free. So will the animal hospital. You say you love your pets, but then you trust strangers, most well meaning but ill informed, tell you what you should do.

I think it’s fine to try to get opinions, but when you’re dealing with the health issues, do you really believe anyone (even a vet) could diagnosis a pet without an exam over the internet?
Sorry, "Cash" – didn’t know you enjoyed and wanted to stay ignorant. What you don’t seem to notice is that most of the answers given to so many questions are actually dangerously wrong – guess some of us care more than others that some poor kid somewhere doesn’t listen to a clown tell them to wait a couple of days to see if what their dog just ate will kill them or not! Lose the attitude and maybe you will learn something and increase the value you have to offer!

Great question and good point. Don’t let someone as rude as a cash stop you from being informative. Some people are have no smarts but their mouth and they are a waste of energy.

Yes, if someone can get professional counsel for free and advice on what to look for as symptoms of an emergency then they are pretty dumb not to!

Good job!

How long should you wait before getting new pet for your other pets?

People ask some really silly questions, considering you’re on the internet just google the problem.

I think that some health questions are acceptable. I mean, if your pet is bleeding profusely, or yelping in pain, ASAP a vet.

Not all areas have a 24 hour animal hospital. Mine does not. My vet does have an emergancy number, though.

But if your pet just got a paper cut or has a runny nose and you would like to know what to do to help it’s pain, I can understand posting a question and getting multiple (maybe not as professional as a vet) answers.

There are some animal specific diseases/characteristics that ARE answerable over the internet. Like for rabbits, they only have a few common diseases and most have one or two tall-tale signs.

And you have to remember that people on Yahoo aren’t looking for a diagnosis, they are looking for help.

However, I do agree that too many people’s first reaction are to go to answers and post a question. If their first instinct is "This is an emergancy!" then they should definately call their vet. However, most of the health questions I see are either minor, or so major that the animal will die soon anyways.

But you are right. They should definately call a vet–not perfect strangers.

In some cases, the question is asked when the animal isn’t in any life threatening distress and the person asking is looking for a quick answer. There are many things that can be treated on pets that can be done at home with the average medicine cabinet with a little knowledge. cuts and scratched from a fight, excessive itching and scratching a spot, etc can all be treated at home with minimal fuss.

In other cases, 24 hour vet clinics aren’t everywhere. There are none where I live and the nearest one (found after a lengthy internet search – which you seem to be ranting about) is many hours away.

Other cases still are people who have nothing better to do in their spare time than to make up some disease or illness (the more horrific the better) and then laugh at all the people telling them to get the poor kitty that was (supposedly) run over by a landing 747 or other such nonsense to the vet ASAP.

Other people still are just brainwashed that the internet is the end all be all of knowledge and as such go to there first. These are also the people who would go to the internet to look up how to treat a heart attack without thinking to call 911.

Rant all you want, it will not do much good. This is why I stopped answering such posts. If everyone would do that, then less idiots would post.

WHAT… A good vet will always answer your questions over the phone..sorry to tell you that if a veterinarian starts giving you answers for a pet emergency and she/he has never seen the pet before is a veterinarian that needs to go back and reevaluate herself/himself.

Good veterinarians will tell you that you need to bring the pet in for an exam so that they can better assess the animal and see what the problems is.

BTW…I have/would never ask any Q’s about my pets if they would be in need of emergency medical care ..if they do we are out the door and into the vet clinic. I care too much about my pets to waste the time on YA to get some uneducated answers or the obvious answer VET… so don’t be so quick to jude.

I believe on the surface your question is fair, however many people worry about the simplest of things that can be easily and quickly remedied at home, vets are the professional health care option, however many don’t have the expertise in everything ‘we’ think they may have…….eg Vets train for years, yet get (if they are lucky) one session on one day on dog food and what constitutes a good diet for a dog………….given by a dog food manufacturer own nutritionist, who also financially support the vet college and give very favourable discounts to vets to supplement their own income streams……yet when vets recommend a dog food it isn’t always the right food for the dog, however generally the right food for the vet because they sell it.

I personally know when I need to visit my vet with my animals but I also know more than the average pet owner( and pet owners are the ‘norm’ on YA) and I work alongside several vets professionally who if I am not there are always on the phone about some issue or another for their clients animals including dogs……..vets are very much NOT the only option and many issues can be prevented way before they even become a health issue.
